Not only electron tubes operate at low noise at low temperature and low plate voltage but if a battery powers both heaters and anode there is no power supply noise too. See older posts.
The front end dictates the performance of the whole system as any defect here will be amplified by the rest of the stages.
How about an electron microscope, radio telescope or MC or MM record playing cartridge front end?
