Bass is the foundation of music and comes from the Hellenic word Βασις meaning base or foundation [Bach].
If a melody usually has a tendency to move up in frequency, contrary motion [Bach] requires that the bass moves down in frequency. So we usually find the same corect bass note by moving the left hand to the left instead of to the right of the keyboard.
Therefore it seems more practical thinking of bass notes instead of degrees going up I, II, III etc as steps going down. Is this the reason composers self educated in music find it more easy, eg Vagelis.
Bass notes can be remembered more easily if we thing the bass as descending.
An obvious example:
Old and Wise - Alan Parson's Project
First bass is A, then G (a step to the left) then F (a step to the left).
The actual code of the brilliant introduction is:
A
G6
F7
E7
F7
E7
D7
E7
A3#
Other obvious example:
Air on G string - Bach
