Perhaps what had been missing at the time is the treatment of the recording room with elastomer membrane bass absorbers, like linoleum ones etc.
And monitoring to fullrange Auratone 5C type speakers etc.
The Ferrograph has a small fullrange speaker fed by a transistor amplifier. This amplifier should not had been disabled while playing around with it.
