Have just listened to the 2nd track from Fame soundtrack.
Out Here on my Own - Gore, Gore, Cara
re recorded from CD to Uher 4200 stereo with cleaned heads etc, running at 7.5 inch per second, new batteries.
One speaker is the internal UHER eliptic full range for left channel.
The other speaker is the linoleum Pleiades Auratone 5C type monitoring speaker with Tesla 5in full range speaker with huge magnet. It is connected to the right power amp channel, using the speaker amp out terminal of UHER.
The sound is amazing, close to having Irene Cara in the room.
Some reasons coming to mind are the excellent quality of the original Fame soundtrack recording. The excellence of the Uher 4200 report, the excellent BASF SM911 tape used on UHER.

But on the same tape just before the 2nd song from Fame re recording is a Pleiades recording. A test male vocal using a nice omni moving coil mic at a few inch while singing a Capella The Power of Love - FGTH.
Although it sounds good, live, real, it sounds nowhere as good as the Fame recording.
What is the main difference some artistic matters aside in the 2 recordings?
The Fame recoding has an HF sparkle. The Pleiades recording has a mid heaviness, somewhat bass heaviness and no treble sparkle.
Why?
Possibly the way the Irene Cara voice was EQed so that it sounds spectacular to listener's brain. This is possibly what a great producer wants for his, her listeners.
On the Pleiades recording possibly due to the fact that the mic, inexpensive AKG plastic omni or Beyer M55 was directly connected without a Pleiades (R,L) gentle slope high pass filter.
Why was a Pleiades filter not used?
1stly DIN connectors not ready yet. 2ndly Due to the amazing quality of UHER so voice still sounding spectacularly live 3rdly Sennhesier HD580 headphones were used which have an extended HF response "covering" or not highlighting the production fault.
Bottom line...
It sounds good on HD580. It did not sound good on the UHER speaker.
The mistake was to blame the UHER speaker and not my recording.
So it is a production fault and not a reproduction one.
The linoleum Pleiades Auratone 5C type speaker immediatly show the problem. So does the full range speaker of the UHER 4200. Some truth speakers?
