Connecting a synth to one speaker instead of 2

This was tried yesterday with Vicky.


Signal path, setup:


Living room - Yamaha PSR-27 keyboard with its 2 speakers disabled - JVC 9425W used as amplifier - Pleiades linoleum Autatone 5C type speaker - male, female listeners


The one speaker option sounded much better.
Focused
Clear sound
Sweet
Real
Professional


The 2 speaker option sounded confused.

Γ is how it looks from top view.


Such a structure made up of 2 pieces of wood panels was found yesterday by chance. It could had been made by IKEA as kitchen furniture.


It may be self supporting.


How would it sound with the Tesla 5in fullrange drive unit?


The idea behind it is that there are no opposite sides, therefore no standing waves created by the Γ structure.


A bottom or base shelf could support an amplifier and the strategically placed weight could increase stability by changing the centre of gravity.

JVC Nivico 9425W without external monitoring speaker

It was tried with Vicky.


It was connected to either a smart phone or a CD Walkman


Perhaps it sounds better with its internal large speaker and soft tweeter than connected to Pleiades linoleum Auratone 5C type speaker.


All needed is to reduce treble with its treble control.


A possible reason why it sounds better may be that it is open back so standing waves almost disappear and voice sounds very nice.

Later addition:
A few day later while listening a cassette (Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd re recording from vinyl to cassette) on Sony TC-D5M trough JVC9425W the opposite had been observed. The Pleiades monitoring speake sounded clearer or better.

Pleiades microphone filters on public address systems

Without a gentle slope low cut Pleiades filter it sound very bass, mid heavy.


With a Pleiades (130Ω,40mH) inline XLR filter the perceived frequency spectrum is even. The mic distance must be greater than 12in.

Creating tremolo responsive at the speed of light

How it is done?

A CD Walkman etc plays music.

Output ground is connected to input battery amplifier ground. The amplifier should be battery powered for less risk.

Signal out is connected by touch to one finger of right hand. Other fingers of right hand complete the signal circuit by touching the amplifier input jack.

It sounds great when modulating vocals etc.

It responds at the speed of light as electrons are doing the work in real time. They dance to the music. When the circuit is completed or closed the electromagnetic wave travels at the speed of light. So nearby electrons to amplifier input get to dance almost instateneously.

Nice effects can be created by gently taping fingers at multiples of music tempo etc.

Once it is tried it can be readily realized how slow even the fastest digital computers are.

Saw this in a shop while walking in Athens.

How would it sound with the drive unit changed to a Tesla TVM ARX-130-20/4?
How would it sound with the cube box made of linoleum?

Is stereo an analog of diplopia (vision)?

Yesterday 2 Pleiades linoleum Auratone 5C type monitoring speakers were connected in series in phase.


For the setup, signal path please see yesterday's  posts.


So both were reproducing the same audio signal.


So both speakers were reproducing the singer.


So 2 singers were heard in the room. Or even worse the interference effect of 2 acoustic wave signals originating from different points in space.


No wonder that when only one speaker was connected the sound became natural, realistic, clear, impressive. Both male, female listener agreed. Vicky used the term diplopia.
A Dionna Warwick CD was used for the tests.


Of course stereo can do any things if for example a Blumlein recording is made. But if the vocal is the same on each speaker as is usually the case then one speaker mono should sound better.

Comparing 2 Pleiades linoleum Auratone type 5C speakers

Vicky brought today her speaker with same model Tesla drive unit.


Her speaker sounds much better.
A class of quality.

Why the difference?


The first speaker is made of vintage 2010? Tarkett linoleum.
Vicky's is made of contemporary red color Tarkett linoleum.


Other difference is that on Vicky's speaker the drive unit is mounted off center.


Other difference may be abuse of the 1st speaker with DC current etc.

Samsung Galaxy clearly sounds better
Clear extended treble with no harshness (male listener)

Later addition:
On a modern Galaxy the sound as judged by listening to Idlewild - Travis on YouTube  on Sennheiser HD580 headphones is bass heavy. Setting were explored and it was found that the EQ setting was flat nevertheless, strange.

Famous music extracts score book

It would nice to have a book:


Containing famous riffs, extracts etc of beautiful pop music.
Eg end of Clocks - Coldplay.


With nice colored written score. For example different color for notes, for lines, for music staffs etc.


Which would guide progressively to more difficult examples leading to  independence of hands, rhythm etc.


Which would start with simple and beautiful sounding examples with only one note played by the left hand (bass) and only only note by the right hand (melody) at the same time.
For example beginning extract of Air - Bach played with 2 voices only.


Which would lead to more involved examples in 4 part harmony.
Eg introduction of Old and Wise - Alan Parsons Project


Which would show that great pop or classical music is not much more that great bass with the right numbers above it to create harmony and melody [Bach, Niedt].


Which would therefore teach how music is made, how it works, not just how it is played.


Which would contain great examples such as:
Face to Face - The Twins
Viva la Vida - Coldplay
With or Without You - U2
Instabile (intro) - Nec
Never let me down again (outdo) - Depeche mode


(Inspired while trying to assist Vicky repeating some played examples on keyboard).

Ie C bass with D, G bass with A.


As we can read on Bach's composing manual the 9th note (A) above bass (G) is prepared (by anticipating repetition) and then the 3rd (bB) above bass (G) is added. [Bach, Niedt]


There is also a great sounding modulation from the key of D minor to C minor at chorus).

It sounds great, the bass compensating amplifier connected to a mobile phone and an Auratone 5C type speaker.

Shock mounting microphones

It must be extremely important.


Perhaps this is the reason why most Pleiades experiments are done with microphones hand held.

How does the Shure SM59 microphone operate?

Referring to patent US3989905, assignee Shure Brothers Inc, inventors C. Roger Anderson, Eduard A. Rusch, Charles E. Seeler.


Mechano-pneumatic shock mount means that air molecules are automatically sent to the back of the diaphragm in order to cancel handing noise.
The cartridge is supported by 2 compliant toroidal supports.
There is a diaphragm at the end of one of the chambers.
Adjustable pressure build up? and adjustable air leak is used to make the SM59 one the less vibration immune microphones.


Here is a small extract from the patent description:


Assuming a shock force is applied to casing 100 in the direction of the arrow F (the patemt document shows a force in the direction of the axis of the microphone towards XLR connector), casing 100 momentarily moves to the left relative to housing 30, thereby creating a slight pressure in cavity 90. A small percentage of shock force F is coupled to housing 30, thereby through shock mounts 122 and 132 so that transducer assembly 28 tends to move to the left relative to diaphragm 12 and voice coil 24, which are resiliency mounted  on transducer assembly 28. This relative movement between transducer assembly 28 and voice coil 24 would normally produce an electrical output from the microphone. However, the pressure in cavity 90 tends to move diaphragm 12 to the left in step with the movement of transducer assembly 28, so that the relative movement between voice coil 24 and transducer assembly 28 is minimized.
Pressure from cavity 90 is coupled to side 15 (back of diaphragm) of diaphragm 12 through rear entry channel 94 in the manner previously described in order to keep diaphragm 12 in step with assembly
28.
By using components of the type described and adjusting the components in the manner taught, the output of the microphone due to mechanical shocks applied to casing 100 in a direction parallel to axis 20 may be substantially reduced over a wide of frequencies.

It was played last week to Vicky on an 80's Yamaha portable keyboard and she really liked it thinking it sounds out of this world.


She prefers an organ arrangement to a lite one as the sound has an ethereal continuity.
