Veloudina the cat stood on her back feet trying to reach the Suzuki chromatic harmonica emitting nice sounding notes

Recording soft singing vocal with Shure VP64 microphone outdoors

Outdoors creates this soft natural big intimasy without comb filter frequency responce artifacts. Signal path: George singing very softly Wasting my young Years - London Grammar - outdoors (balcony) with heavy neighboor a/c machinery noise - VP64 at 2-3 in - Pleiades soft slope bass filter (130Ohms, 40mH) - GSM German transformer 500Ohms to 50KOhms of 230mH input inductance for more low cut - Tascam Porta Two HS with bass at -2 and trable at +1 - JVC 9425W radio used as monitoring subtle bass boost amplifier for using a small speaker - speaker is Pleiades linoleum Auratone 5C type with Tesla 5in fullrange - indoors - Vicky's ears, mind. (Bass cut is used for flat frequency responce from singer's mind to listener's mind, see Motion Picture Recording and Reproducing Characteristics - D. P. Lowe, K. F. Morgan - Journal of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers). Monitoring level was calibrated by listening to Une belle Histoire- Fugain

How is this bossa nova rimshot beat created then?

After hours of listening with Vicky to the song In a manner of Speaking - Nouvelle Vaque, the following rule of thump had been found: 3,3,4,3,3 beats ie total of 16 beats. Pa ta ta, Pa ta kia, Pa ta ta kia, Pa ta ta, Pa ta kia. Repeat.

A one transistor fm tuner, with lock-in homodyne (same frequecy as carrier) phase demodulator

This was found by chance on the children Hit Radio AM/FM spring kit given by Spyros, made by Eastcolight Ltd. The C1923 VHF transistor is powered by 3V. Between collector and emmiter there is 10pF apparently to sustain oscillation. Emitter is connected to RFC (radio frequency choke) which is then connected to 2.7K which is then connected to (-). A 10nF is connected from base to (-) so apparently bass is grounded (grounded bass topology). FM antena is connected through 5pF to emitter. Tank reasonant circuit is (8pF//variable C//L made by 5 thick turns of small diameter) connected to collector. In series with this LC is a 10K load resistor for getting the music signal! So the other side of 10K is supplied by 3V. 47uF is the decoupling power supply capacitor which maintains 3V at its terminals. Lower side of 10K is connected to 10nF//50nF to (-). Apparently 10nF is decoupling and 50nF is frequency response deemphasis. There is also a 20nF from bottom of 10K or top of LC to RFC. Bias is by 10K from lower side of load resistor to base. 2 simple grounded emiiter stages with 330K bias resistor each from collector to base amplify audio. Important information on understanding operation was found on the nri fundamentals of FM reception 33CC-1, page 18, locked-in oscillator detector. Then while Vicky was driving it was observed again how the wheels appear to go backwards of forwards due to the stroboscopic effect apparently analogous to the audio signal detected by phase change. The street flickering light is the local oscilator and the changing angular velocity of whells is the information detected. Then the interesting white paper , Principles of Lock-in Detection - zhinst.com was found. How would the ability of extracting a signal a million times less than noise combine with an open grid, base or gate amplifier, or are they using such front end already? Then found by chance Homodyne detection on page 413 of the Schwartz book on Information Transmission. Homodyne comes from homo which comes from homio which in Hellenic means same. Botto0m line we want to listen to the radio station at 100MHz, we adjust the oscilator to 100MHz. Was FM radio invented by observing how a regenerative detector could detect phasechange when it would perhaps self oscillate?

Veloudina

He arrived late at the forest. Veloudina the cat greated with her very high pitch for a cat couter soprano voice. After she had something little to eat he stood facing the forest at night with a good quality Suzuki chromatic harmonica for the first time. Slowly and very softly starting warming it up. Veloudina hearing for the first time such a sound in her life went bananas. She immediately aproached and started caressing him with her velvetine hair. On almost every new note in tune she would come back almost dancing or singing and she would caress him with her tail on his chest. The melody is Midnight Cowboy - John Barry

Should the record producer be allowed to adjust the electronic component values (between safer range of values) of a simple say front end mic amplifier etc circuit?

At your risk. For example adjusting just Vb on an open control element amplifier. For example an open grid electron tube front end microphone preamplifier. Or even adjust cathode temperature by adjusting heater voltage. Other example, adjusting Rl, Rk, Vb in order to suit her, his recording environment and the sound in their mind. In pure low component count simple signal path circuits it should be possible using variable resistors, capacitors, inductors etc. Would this be a better alternative to the fixed components world set by the electronic engineer who then has to add for the producer, lesser perhaps sounding EQs, adjust threshold in a limiter, overload protection pad etc. When for example Rl is adjusted the centre quiesecent point can be shifted for production of less or more second harmonic distortion and less or more 3rd etc. Vb can dictate headroom which may be intentionally set to low for more processing of peaks. Anode current, usually in microamps region, cathode temperature can decrese gain but improve signal to noise ratio or even increase gain. Interaction of change of gm (transconductance or anode resistance) can change the frequency response by interaction with the output transformer inductance in order to create a flat frequency response from producer's mind to listener's mind. Should the circle between record producer and electronic engineer complete in phase or out of phase;) See also: Adjusting cathode temperature of electron tubes, for example Georg Neumann may have deliberately underheated the VF14 electron tube of the U47 microphone from %0mA at 60V to 40mA at 35V.

Artificial Double Tracking (ADT) without time delay?

A synch analog copy of the vocal is rerecorded and then added (mixed with the 1st generation master take). Example, on Tezcatlipoca - Ira, George, firtsly the vocal and DX200 drum loop was recorded on Tascam porta one. Then when overdubbing bass and synth (micrKorg) strings, by newbe mistake the vocal had been transfered too on the strings or bass track. This possibly makes the vocal louder or standing out as observed by Vicky while listening to an mp3 transfer of the session cassette where on the particular balance (mix) strings are spontaneously added or remomed.

The WE 408 A 6028 substitute electron tube for the VF14 electron tube on the Neumann U47 microphones...

seems a clever idea as both electron tubes are specified at 50mA heater current and are therefore underheated at 40mA;)

On suspending an omnidirectinal speaker from ceiling

At your risk. After Spriros on Katoumas shop kindly giving a short Paso catalogue, an omni speaker was seen suspended from ceiling like a modern chandelier lighting. So today the following experiments were done: Placing a flower pot (adaption of an idea by the other Michalis) on floor and then placing an 8in fullrange speaker on top of the flower pot! Placing the Pleiades linoleum Auratone 5C type monitoring speaker on the wooden floor with speaker facing the ceiling. Both sounded very nice connected to JVC 9425W bass boosing radio, with excellent bass, liveliness. Advantage is that sound quality stays the same around the speaker and that the speaker is almost never straight in front of the listener which does not seem to sound right on those speakers anyway as the sound gets too bright.

Tezcatlipoca - Ira, George YouTube description correction

To best of memory, the YouTube upload of Tezcatlipoca - Ira was done by creatiing an mp3 hi resoluction file recorded on m-audio microtrack. Since the masters are on cassette it is an AAD track. The recording session was recorded on analog cassette with date time code 10030215. The mix master was done next day on cassette 10030312, it cannot be remembered if limiter was on, on Sony TC-D5M. Reverb was by Korg DRV-1000. The Angel toy glockenspiel must had been played in real time while the mix master was being recorded. The Tascam Porta One was varispeed from D minor to D sharp minor in order to enchance the vocal properties, so the glockenspiel must had been played on D sharp minor. Tons of reverberation time had been added, by adjusting all knobs at max reverberation time including the turbo knob. Then at a later day after cleaning heads the mix master cassette was played back, the Sony TC-D5M was connected to the Neumann PEV-930-02 passive Eqs (directly connected to m-audio microtrack line in) to reduce excess bass etc and the mp3 master was recorded on m-audio microtrack. The windows video editor must had been used together with the photo sent by Ira to create the video uploaded on YouTube. Is it best to do as least processing and let YouTube do the digital level compression etc?

Fleetwood Mac recording in the studio as seen on YouTube

pleiades radio theme

Brought to attention by Vicky. Key is A minor. Bach bass code is: F7 then E7 then D#3,7. So it is played: E is played sustained by right hand , then bass F and A below E are also added, then D is sustained and then E bass is also added together with G below D, then E is sustained and then bass D is also added together with F sharp and A below E. Compensating for voice effort curves by adjusting the anode potential on open grid tubes

At your risk. The softer the voice the more bass and treble (bandwidth)[2] it contains. If we reproduce a soft voice at higher intensity it will sound like bass heavy like mud on a flat frequency responce system as the Fletcher Munson curves come into aditional play too. In order for such a recording to sound correct ie flat frequency response from producer's brain to listener's brain, bass or treble must be cut ie amplifier bandwidth reduced accordingly. This sometimes explain why cheap mics may do an excellent vocal job at certain applications. The softer the voice and the higher the reproduced intencity the less the bandwidth needed. A way to peform such adjustments with least components is to use an open grid electron tube preamplifier stage and adjust just the plate (anode) voltage. At low anode potential less anode current takes place, the higher the anode internal resistance and the higher the bass cutoff frequency by its (ra) interaction with the primary inductance of the electron tube stage output transformer. Conversly for a loud singing voice performace we may increase the Vb supply and increase bandwidth and headroom. A low plate potential can create a very low noise front end amplifier which is convenient for a soft singing peformance. Further reading: Pleiades V6 1H4 amplifier schematic. Is Electronics A Systems Approach - Neil Storey published in Hellas?

Pondering about it and whether it would be nice to see it at window shops of electronic parts shops in Athens i accidentaly bumped to Kelly from Kalendis publishers. They may mostly known to me from the children's book The Witch who hated carols. (How about other series such as the Cook who hated vegetable trans fat, The pilot who hated autopilots, the memory stick who hate electrons, The radio who hated transistors, the Youtube server who hated... Science at its higher level is art and perhaps even a fairytale. Richard Feynman got his Nobel price in Physics for his Feynman diagrams which are like cartoons used to solve difficult equations. Look around. Electrons are dancing to music on radio antenas. Radio telescopes receive old photons, grandgrand dad photons from the begining of the Universe or Time?

Electronics A Systems Aproach - Neil Storey

It is currently at it's 6th edition. I fondly remember Dr. Storey lecturing all engineering students at Warwick university huge engineering lecture theater. It was the 90's, we were about 300 students listening attentively to him lecturing, tall, standing up his Analogue Electronics course. There were excellent notes handed on a blue lecturebook. He was showing them in transparences while adding on top other transparency for the text that was missing. So we only hand wrote some of it! An excellent introduction to input, output impedance, maximum power theorem, transistors, class A amplifiers, load lines etc. At the end of the 15 lectures we all stood up and applaud. I then found by chance the 1st edition of his book at Warwick's university bookshop. And he autographed, All the Best, Neil Storey. His faboulus book with excellent explanations is currently read in India, translated in Italian,...

How did the misconception arise that electron tubes vannot operate at low anode potential?

Perhaps from the fact that on ordinary common circuits with a cathode resistor, the electron tube is biased negatively 2 times. One by the heated cathode loosing electrons thereby becoming positive wrt grid. Secondly by further raising the cathode potential by the bias resistor. So grid becoming even more negative wrt cathode.

Comparison of 1H4, DC90, DC96, DF97 electron tubes with open grid and low anode voltage

At your risk. Please take all safety precautions. Summary: For mic, headphone tests DC90 sounded best and amazing at just Ia=20 microamperes at Va=18V. This could not be repeated as subsequently anode current increased to 40uA due to unknown systematic error. DF96 was least microphonic. Signal path: male singing voice - reverberant small room - Shure VP64 at 1-12 in - Pleiades V6 1H4 - Realistic disco mixer at mic in - Sennheiser HD580 - listener's, singers' brain). An octal to noval base adaptor was made to make posible the quick insertion of D family electron tubes to the Pleiades V6 1H4 octal base. All electron tubes open grid. 1H4: Sounds great and low noise as always with Ia=20uA at Va=12V. DC90:Ia=1.5uA at Va=12V, low noise, low gain, nice midband edge. Ia=22uA at Va=18V, amazing balanced sound. Ia=240uA at Va=25V, no listening to avoid magnetisation of output transformer. It seems low battery consumption RIAA le Pasific Walthers type pres are possible with electron tubes. To recap amazing sound at 18V, 22 microamperes. Experience makes things easiser to proceed. Vb=12V, Ia=30uAwith 5.6Mohm from anode to grid. VP64 mic did not sound very nice. Possible transformer, mic loading by decrease of input impedance. bass heaviness, undefined, boring sound. DC96: Vb=12V, Ia about 0. Rag=5M6, Ia becomes 7uA. Too much grit edge, not a great sound. Less gain at 5uA. At open grid, Vb=19V, Ia=4uA. Vb=25V, Ia=60uA, very bass heavy, grit edge, very low noise. Back to DC90: Vb=18V, Ia=40uA, why? Interminent heater problem? VP64 sound is nice but not as good as at 20mA. Possible cause bass heaviness by lower ra interaction with Lp of output transformer (anode resistance, primary inductane interaction). DF97 anode to screen grid: Vb=18V, Ia=5uA. Vb=25V, Ia=25u 62ua in one minute. Nice sound , very low noise, a bit bass heavy, no microphony, less bass heavy when begining at 20uA. Back to DC90: Vb=18V, Ia=40uA, Vb=25V, Ia+370uA, Vb=12V, Ia=2.6uA, intimate telephonic sound, still low noise but not perfect. Back to 1H4: Vb=12V, Ia=25uA, some microphony including bass one. very nice sound, a bit bass heavy but presence, 25uA sounds great on mic. Back to Pleiades Siemens AC151 VI open base: great sound, low noise, some flicker bass noise, when including WE 1:2 input transformer bass noise almost absent. A bit metalic but stangly smooth sound, too much gain, fraction of cost or power consumption.

How to operate electron tubes (vacuum tubes or electronic valves) at small anode potential (low voltage)

At your risk. Please take all safety precautions (for example left hand always in the back pocket, a fuse in series with a battery etc). When the cathode is heated it emmits electrons, so it becomes positive wrt grid or the grid negative wrt cathode. This intrinsic (negative) bias usually more than -1Volt (measured accurately with an extremely high impedance voltmeter) can cut off anode current at low anode potential. If we use a lower impedance voltmeter to measure this contact potential in fact we increase anode current by pulling up the negative grid by the positive cathode. A cathode resistor on the other hand will decrease this pull up bias. How can we make an electron tube operate at a low anode potential say 6V to 20V? Cathode is connected to ground. We can leave the grid floating (at space potential) and couple the input signal by a high quality capacitor. Depending on the mu (amplification factor) of the electron tube, if mu is say 10 then the penetration of the anode electric field above say 12V will make the grid less negative and the electron tube will operate with a healthy anode current. Advantages are extreme low noise by battery (in series with a protective fuse) operation, low temperature of electrodes leading to low secondary emission, low heater current, low radiation photoemmision from one electrode to another, low electron velocity therfore low secondary emmision by bombardment of an electrode by high velocity electrons. Less ionisation of residual gas etc. (see older euroelectron posts for references). For rediculusly low anode potential a high megohm pullup or Pleiades bias resistor can be used from anode or Vb to grid. Grid is still negative but less so. Input impedance of the electronic valve is decreased to say 100K. A great advantage of open grid is no grid current. Electron tube is so sensitive at such condition that it may become photosensistive too (gm of tube changind or modulated by light)! Further reading: Operating Features of the Audion _ E. h. How would a 2SJ74 (complimentary of 2SK170), microphone or RIAA or headphones amplifier sound?

One transistor headphone amplifier

At your risk, please take all known safety measures for your ears and headphones. How would a Pleiades Electra II amplifier sound with a Toshiba 2SK170 JFET? It seems ideal as it can give a 5mA quiesent current at 12V for class A operation (electrons flowing all the time). So music signal to gate through a potentiometer, amplified signal taken from drain by connecting 300 ohm headphones directly through battery plus and safety fuse.

On Music Making

For example, the song It Must Have Been Love - Roxette. Left hand thinks (single) bass notes, degrees or steps of a scale. Right hand adds harmony by thinking 1 or 3 or 5 or 7 or 9 or 11 or 13 above bass. Singer sings melody. That's all. The particular example song is written on C major scale. So the seven notes on our ususal music universe (do re mi fa sol la si) are all natural corresponding to the white keys on the music keyboard. Bass begins with C (tonic of the scale) so chord is C E G. Then bass chooses the subdominant of the scale which is F and chord becomes F A C. For best sound results we may use the least possible change of notes on the right hand (see principle of least change in music). So progression from bass F to Bass D is played F A C to F A D instead of D F A which sounds trivial or wrong. (from a discussion with Vicky). Further reading: Bach Bass Rules - Niedt, Bach

On creating a practical 25 volts DC source with four 4LR44 batteries

Attention: At your risk: Even 25 volts can kill. Please take all safety precausions including the left hand to the back pocket (this avoids an accidental electric current through the heart). Please also use a suitable fuse in series with a battery to avoid a fire or burn hazard. Today four 4LR44 6volt batteries were carefully inserted inside a Bulgin 2x AA battery holder, with left hand in back pocket and without touching any metal part with the right hand. Although batteries are about 1mm thinner than AA batteries, the length of four 4LR44 is the same as two AA batteries and it gloriously worked. It should be good fun to use such source of voltage for JfET 2SK170 pres, DC90, DC96, DAF96, DF97 etc electron tube Pleiades V6 1H4 type pres with Pleiades bias or even open grid? 1H4 has been found to be a miracle of low noise at 12V anode potential with grid at space potential.

Even 25 volts could kill

All safety precausions should be taken including the left hand in the back pocket to avoid accidental electric current circulation through the heart. First aids after an electric shock must be read, exercised. Even a few seconds delay can proove fatal. They are examples of persons surviving even after an 8 hour first aid breath support. A suitable fuse in series with a battery also helps preventing a fire hazard. Reference:Helliniki Radiophonia - Radio Karagianni Publications

Low Voltage Tubes

low mu or amplification factor for operation with low plate or anode voltage. Pleiades lab experience has found gm to be not as important for ultra low noise, low anode voltge, underheated heaters, batteriy powering (in series with protective fuse), Pleiades pull up bias or perhaps even better grid open or at space potential seem more important. So as a summary, low mu, low temperature to avoid secondary emmision, low glow to avoid photoemmision, low plate voltage to avoide secondary emmision by high velocity electron collision, open grid for no grid current seem to be important. Experience with moving coil or ribbon mics which seem much more demanding that MM cartridges due to fact that a mic signal has thousands times more dynamic range that a record playing cartridge signal (see the VU meter needle move not more than 20dB on LPs)... ECC82 are great at 6-12V anode potential with Pleiades bias. Even better for triode connected EF183. Nuvistors too. See older posts for more information. But all above electron tubes consume say 300mA at 6V which is a lot for a portable battery powered preamplifier. For just 10s of milliampers at say 1.4V... CV2269, record low consumption with just one AAA battery in series with fuse for both heaters and anode, see Pleiades v1, V6 etc, has not been tried yet at open grid with a bit higher anode potential. Also 1H4, see Pleiades V6 1H4 open grid, scary resolution and low noise. DCC90, DC90, DC96, DC70, DF97 etc which have not been tried yet at Pleiades lab seem great, promising candidates for pehaps the ultimate in quality and portability. Hearing aid tubes. For some references please see previous post.

Life's so good

220nF is connected from Stanton 680 cartridge to gate of 2SK170 on previous post on Walters Le Passific RIAA preamplifier

Life is Good

The fabulous Walter's Le Pasific RIAA Pre revisited

2nd stage added. It did not sound much impressive when connected to Realistic Disco mixer line in. But when feeding the Sennheiser HD580 headphones directly, jaw droped. Amazing smooth sound. Lucy on vinylengine listening at 3am to Pink Floyd raves about it. Congratulations Mr Hiraga and Mr Walters. Signal path: I've had the time of my life from Dirty Dancing LP - Technics SL1200MK2 - Stanton D6800 EEE-III - Stanton 680 moving iron cantilever cartridge - Le Passific MM RIAA by Walters, derived from Hiraga, one channel - Sennheiser HD580. 4 6V camera type batteries can be used in series inside a Bulgin 2AA battery holder? A fuse in series for protection. It is very low noise too. How would DCC90 triodes compare at such low anode voltage and perhaps open grid for perhaps even less noise or better sound quality? Heaters underhetated a bit or more too for even more detail extraction from magical vinyls. The high Gm model needs perhaps modification?, electron tubes can sound scaringly low noise even at 14 micramperes anode currect especially when open grid, see Pleiades V6 1H4. If more gm is needed then Pleiades bias from anode to grid could be used, but it may not sound less or equally low noise. How would such a fabulous 2SK170 stage sound as a microphone preamplifier? Would an open gate or less drain voltage make it even more low noise, or sounding better? Would an input or output transformer create easier a flat frequency response from producer's brain to listener' brain But back to MM or moving iron or moving coil. Can Le Passific Walters be modified for open gate?

How would radio waves from space sound like if converted to audio frequency?

Vicky sugested this while we were viewing vids on radio astronomy, how radio telescopes work etc. For example using a local oscillator and mixer to convert high frequency to low frequency.

Kimitirio Megalon Eterion

Giant Company cemetery

A great attenuating pad to feed transistor base?

Is possibly a series resistor. It can convert a mic in to line input. Example signal path: mic - Pleiades Siemens AC151 IV open base front end - 100K series pot - Realistic Disco mixer mic in - Sennheiser Hd 580

Electronic Devices with open signal control electrode

For example the Pleiades Siemens AC151 IV front end LNA (low noise amplifier) is so low noise when bias resistor is disconnected from base that it can descriminate between short circuit and 200 Ohms capacitively coupled to base. Ie it can read the thermal noise of a 200 Ohm resistance. Not so impresively as the Pleiades V6 1H4 open grid but it can do it even without an input transformer. It is very impressive how quiet both amps are at short circtuited input. And how loud they then sound when a dynamic mic is connected. Ambient acoustic noise is so much magnified.

A rough investigation on the Walter 2SK170 Le Passific RIAA preamp

Only the first stage was made up today on breadboard with 20 per cent at least variation in component values. Signal path:Dirty Dancing lp - Stanton 680 - 1st stage of Walter's le Passific - Realistic disco mixer at mic in (lower input load, a series resistor should had been used) - Sennheiser HD580. When Vb=9V, Vd is 200mV. When Vb is 18V, Vd is 2.5V. When Vb is 27V, Vd is 7 volts. It sounded clear, dynamic and nice but there was lack of depth (even in mono listening). For some reason best sound so far was with 9V with gate open and so charged that VD is 300mV. More investigation and second stage is needed.

How would an open control grid battery powered DCC90 (5A3) RIAA or mic preamplifier sound

Grid at space potential. It does not mean that grid potetial is 0. On the contrary it is negative because of thermal emission of electrons from cathode. But less negative due to electric field penetration from the positive anode. See older posts.

Pleiades lab experience has shown so far that it sounds better (more depth for example)and with low noise figure. On electron tubes, transistors (germanium so far), JFETs. Devices are left free to assume their bias, but we can steer the value by appropriate choise of Vb, load resistor etc. It reminds what can be read on the Wright Tube Preamp Cookbook that what moves must be free to move.

Our best times are now or those to come

All times are good anyway if we like what we are doing!

Sodium bicarbonate, sea water self cleaning teeth experiments failed?

At your risk, this is not a medical advice. After 2 or so years dentist Dimitris found some lack of adamantine. He suggested very careful mechanical cleaning of teeth after every meal with tap water if i do not want toothpaste, dental flosh as well.

Sound Volume and the Ear - Alec Nisbett

Intensity (sound wave power or energy/time) and volume (subjective loudness) As it happens the ratio of intensities in 3 dB is about 2:1. This is convenient to remember, because if we double up a sound source we double the intensity (at a given distance). So if we have one soprano bawling her head off and another joins her singing equaly loudly the sound level will go up 3dB (not all that much more than the minimum detectable by the human ear). But to raise the level by another 3dB two more sopranos are needed. Four are needed for the next 3dB -and so on. Before we get very we are having to add sopranos at the rate of 64 or 128 a time to get any appreciable change of volume. (euroelectron note, this should also explain why low power amps can sound much louder that we expect them to sound). Extract from the excellent book The Use of Microphones - Alec Nisbett. Vicky's gift.

Bias (quiescent point) of Pleiades Siemens open base transistor LNA (low noise amplifier) has changed by change in ambient temperature

As it is spring time and more photons come each day from the sun to the earth, the temperature at Pleiades lab is 24oC, collector current increased to more than 300 micramperes and more volatge drop (by ohm'sl aw) to the 33K load resistor caused a 0.5V collector voltage. The front end amplifier still worked but with distortion, (see also yesterday posts) and there were very severe sibilant problems while singing to Shure VP24 mic. So dentist Dimitris is not to blame. Load collector resistor has been changed to near 20kohms and amp is back to good low noise, interesting sound work again. Vc is again 1.6 volts.

Fastening signal transformer ring core with the large nut of 3 pin DIN connector

So for example the ring itself is around the connector or for example a Bulgin vandal resistant circular switch. But probably not a very good idea aestheticaly at least.

Plexiglass looks nice

A vandal resistant stainless steel switch is mounted on a small plexiglass sheet and looks nice. neutrik XLR, RCA mounted from the inner side should look great too as it is transparent. Should some Pleiades preamplifiers be made on a Plexiglass box?

Other failed Pleiades RIAA experiments

Connecting the Stanton 680 cartrudge to Pleiades Siemens open base AC155 amplifier to Realistic disco mixer line in: VU meter needle moves a little, there seems to be some distortion. Then connecting a passive RIAA network after the AC155 and going to mic in: Distortion at mid range. Sounds nice if 3.3Megohms is connected after the AC155 front end (this was found by chance by an interminent RCA dirty contact).

Is the best rule knowledge?

Is the worst rule ignorance? Are the worst rules knowledge being wrong?

1st Pleiades attempt of RIAA equalisation immediately after the cartridge

It works but takes noise considerations to limit. Signal path: I've had the time of my life from Dirty Dancing LP soundtrack - Technics SL1200 MK2 - Stanton 680 with low output D6800 EEE-III A&R stylus - 33K series 2K7 series 100nF series to gnd - 28nF from 33K to gnd and signal taken from 33K (inacurate network just used for a first impression) - directly to Realistic Disco Mixer mic in or to Pleiades Siemens AC151 open base pre or to Pleiades V6 1H4 open grid pre both feeding Realistic Disco Mixer at mic in - Sennheiser HD580 - listener's brain if any. When RIAA network directly connected to realistic mic in VU needle barely, barely moves but sound is nice smooth dynamic with nice deep bass and extended treble. When the AC151 is connected needle goes crazy, there is hiss at low passages, sound is nice but RIAA inacuracy may be taking place. When Pleiades V6 1H4 is connected more RIAA inacuracy is apparent possibly due to input and output transformers interplay with (V6 1H4 starved heater , plate voltage condition for low noise) input and output impedance in order to make flat frequency response to listener's brain when mic is used at soft voice, sound is more clear but less perhaps interesting with some hiss but less than the AC151. No input transformer should be tried too. Perhaps it might be better to do half of RIAA after the cartridge or all RIAA after the open base or open grid front end. Hiss would be inaudible but there may be overload of open grid base. 1H4 should be fine and after it a volume control should be a good idea to avoid peak overload of 2nd stage. Mic pres have to cope with a thousands times more dynamic range live signal anyway. The original Walter Le Pacific with 2SK170 should be tried.

Is it best to first knowing the rules of the game before any attemp to break them?

For example Bach Bass Rules pdf.

Should the RIAA equalisation be before any active stage?

An MM or MI (Moving iron cantilever such as Stanton 680)record player cartidge gives such high output that if it is connected to mic input of Realistic disco mixer, VU needle hits 0VU whereas a dynamic mic barely moves the needle. But it sounds like shaving a light bulb as there is no RIAA equalisation. Why feeding an electron tube or transistor something that would never want to listen to in our right mind? So why not putting the passive RIAA equalisation network right after the cartridge and then feed with a series capacitor an open grid tube extremely low noise amp such as the Pleiades V6 1H4? Would it work, for example using the Le Pacific MM RIAA passive filter or the pre itself with 1st stage removed? Would this avoid possible 1st stage overload by the razor blade signal usualy fed to the front end?

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

Should not there be a volume control after the first amplifying stage of a microphone or RIAA MM cartridge preamplifier is order to avoid clipping of the 2nd amplifying stage?!

Which is more low noise, open grid or open base?

After some preliminary listening test comparison between Pleiades V6 1H4 and Pleiades Siemens AC151 both are impresively low noise. When connecting the Shure VP64 microphone the transistor gives more gain and voice edge, it seems to overload easier when fed from Pleiades V6 1H4 as Vc is 1.5V. The electron tube is so smooth, quiet. How JFET would compare, open gate? Do radio telescopes use such low noise amplifiers as front end in order to detect few photons from the beginning of the univese?

Lee de Forest did it right in 1907 by connecting only a capacitor to the grid of his 1st triode electron tube amplifier on planet earth

Dr. Lee de Forest, father of electronics patented on 1908 the inclusion of a control grid inside an evacuated electron tube. Thus flow of electrons could be controled by an external tiny signal and the first electronic amplifier was made. After so many years we now have the internet. And the human race is inteligent not to waste earth's energy resources on sensual virtual reality. Ather all it is less energy consuming to caress a real human hand or foot. Lee de Forest on patent US879,532 clearly states that when the grid is flowting by isolating it with a coupling capacitor tiny rdio signals get even more loud on the earphone. This is confirmed on the Pleiades V6 1H4 front end microphone preamplifier. When grid is at space potential and a dynamic microphone is connected to the input transformer it sounds not very unlike the universe expanding. So low noise is the first amplifier on our planet. (a fuse should be connected in series with any battery for safety, a pad, series resistor, potential devider etc should be connected after the front end small signal amplifier to avoid overloading of subsequent amplifying stage(s). Maximising gain of the one germanium open base transistor Pleiades Siemens AC151 VI common emitter RC coupled front end microphone pre pre amplifier

Maximum gain takes place at RL=33KOhm. Vb=-9V, Vc becomes -1.5V, Ic=250microamperes. It sounds very nice bringing out the edge of the voice. Signal path: reverberant room - male singing voice - Shure VP64 - Western Electric 1:2 input transformer - phase reversal (x(-1)) Neutrik XLR adaptor - Ci=56nF - Siemens AC151 VI open base - RL=33KOhms - Co=820nF - Realistic 32-1101A Disco Mixer at line in - Sennheiser HD580 - Singer's, listener's ear brain. It should be great fun to make a ring core ferrite Philips Ferroxcube output transfomer connected directly to Collector and power the transostor through this transformer with 1.5V.

Specifications of a Pleiades 2 open base transistor long tailed pair microphone booster preamplifier

It should be small like a cigarette packet so as to fit inside a pocket. There should be no edges or protruding switches etc so a Bulgin vandal resistant switch is used. It should be self contained with battery and lightweight. Power consumption should be rediculusly low. It should operte in class A but the trnsistors left open base to self bias themselves with low current for low noise?, high imput impedance? etc. It should therfore be very linear at very small mic signals and progresively non linear at higher parts of the signal waveform in order to hve edge nd bring out the detail of music, singer, sax etc. Everything inside should be neat and beautiful and the box may be made of transparent plexiglas etc. Input and output should be traansformer balanced and isolated. Beautiful ring cores should be used for such transformers. There should be no capacitor, no resistor. Miou. It may be called Pleiades open base BC109c long tailed pair. Schematic should be engraved on top of box and is public doamin. Connector may be female nut secured DIN 3 pole. Transistors may be pluged in on IC type base terminals. It should be fun to make at home, beach, forest etc.

Listening to the Pleiades Siemens AC151 one transistor open base front end microphone amplifier at overload level

Signal path: Shure VP64 with male singing voice or Alan parsons Sound Check 2 CD played on Sony Walkman cD Player with its line out attenuated by a 600ohm to 600ohm variable dB laboratory Solartron attenuator - Pleiades Siemens AC151 with Cb 56n when mic is used or 220nF when cD is used for -3bD at 100Hz and flat beyond 20KHz with no negative feedback, base open, Vb=9V, RL=56K, Cout+820nF - Realistic disco mixer at mic in or line in when mic was used or line in when CD was used - Sennheiser HD580 fed by disco mixer or directly by AC151 through a Canford red output transformer inside a Neutrik 1/4in jack. The AC151 prepreamplifier passes the low noise test by canselling effectively the ambient noise when mic is connected out of phase (caution to ear protection needed, see previous post). Mic sounds very clear, the WE 1:2 input transformer was also used with excellent results. The unprocessed sounds on the Alan Parsons CD, near or after overload: Sinewave nice gradual overtones at gradual overload. Voices very nice, soprano reverb out of control intermodulating. Piano nice. Acoustic guitars excellent like Torn - Natalie Imbruglia. Electric, bass guitars very nice distortion. Flute great distortion. Saxophone amazing distortion at any overload level, shows how these amps bring out the edge inside music. Percusion great like those amazing Enoch Light LPs. Cymbals sound bad at overload.Hi hat sounds amazing at overload, again detail inside music brought out. The first orchestral track sounds bad but the later one sounds very good at overload. The techno track sounds amazing. Pipe organ nice too. It seems definetly worth building this preamp inside a plastic box with 9V battery cover. Just a transistor, 2 coupling capacitors and a 56K load resistor. Current consumption at microamp level. Battery may last for ages. Solar powered too?

The more transistors are treated like electron tubes the more they behave like them

For example when comparing an open base low level amplifier transistor stage to an open grid one. The transistor becomes very low noise with a high input impedance. Even biasing with 1Mohm from Vb to base increases gain but noise becomes unacceptable high see Pleiades Siemens AC151 one transistor microphone booster front end. At open base distortion is gradual too as well as overload behaviour like an electron tube. Do transistors behave like JFETS when base is left open, unbiased?

So many decades had been wsted by looking at scopes or spectrum analysers rather than using the best instrument available in the universe which possibly is the ear brain

Forunately it is the music lovers listening and the recorders listening too that have saved electronics

I have never understood what bias to electronic amplifying devices is

At university I was told it is a voltage

Why not letting the first amplifying stage after the microphoneto be the most linear at low levels and gradualy non linear at higher level?

After all is this not what we do when we listen to Frank Sinatra on YouTube? Or what nature does with human or cat ears-brain in order to extract as much information?

Adding 2 sigbals with hybrid transformers while DC current of feeding anode circuits cancel

For example amplifying each mic with an 1H4 electron tube (Pleiades V6 1H4 or CV2269)and use the hybrid transformer as an output transformer for both electron tubes, like on push pull circuits. Inspired while watching the EMI REDD.37 and REDD.51 block diagram while thinkimg of the Kimball mixer in the cinema Engineering book or the Elements of Sound Recording - Frayne, Wolfe books.

The ultimate mic preamplifier low noise test?

Caution: At your risk, this must not be attemped unless there is a limiting protection on the headphone circuit otherwise irreparable ear damage may result. When the microphone preamplifier is very low noise such as the Pleiades V6 1H4 open grid...When the mic is connected out of phase and the mic is aproached: to the Sennheiser HD580 headphones, ambient noise cancels out and at the partucular ear it sounds as if silence is sucked out. Caution: if mic is in phase, ambient noise increases and there is possibility of positive feedback which may damage hearing unless a limiter is in circuit.

Open base transistors

A common emitter Pleiades Siemens AC151 germanium one transistor microphone front end preamplifier was made on S-DeC projects breadboard. Signal path: male singing voice in reverberent room - Revox M3500 - German 500 ohm to 600 ohm low inductance input transformer for isolation and low cut - phase inversion adaptor - 56nf to base - Pleiades amp with Siemens AC151 with Rc=5K6, R(Vb to base)=1Mohm, Cc=220nF, Vb=9.3V, emmiter to ground +, Realistic 32-1101A disco mixer line in or mic in = Sennheiser HD580 - Singer (listener) brain. At such conditions Vc drops to 3.5V. It is noisy, hissy. When the bias resistor was removed ie base floating, gain was reduced, but noise improved, input impedance must had increased and fat nice sounding distortion took place making vocals sound airy and big. At such open base conditions Vc=8.2V, so drop across load resistor is ish 1V and from Ohm's law Ic is ish 1V/5.6Kohm ish 1V/5Kohm ish 200 microampreres.

Is the best sounding microphone preamplifier the one we made when we were kids?

Although I had used a electronic constuctions game called Polycyclomatic 1002 or 501, see for example page 31 on a different game called Philips 40, www.lushprojects.com. Excellent microphone amplifier operating in class A ie electrons flowing all the time while dancing to music.

Very ofter there is no more than 4 notes sounding together in western music

Listening for example to a good song or listening or reading the score of a nice symphony. For example when harmony is F major 3rd major 7th there are many F A C E played on various musical instruments at different registers or octaves.

How would a one stage Pleiades germanium transistor microphone preamplifier sound like?

A Siemens coincidence

Last Wednesday listened with Vicky the Siemens WSW mic preamplifier on youtube. On Thursday while looking for ferite ring cores on Dimoulas shop for input or output transformers, Sylvia gave me the Siemens vintage catalog including ferrites, Mikes Psalidas must had used this on Finos Film console filters as he had show me non ring ferite cores, and Finos studios was a few meters away from Dimoulas shop. On Friday while looking for germanium (high electron mobility) transistors Kostas gave me 2 Siemens hearing aid mic preamps. Same day at Sideris shop a tiny Retex ABOX, palm size with beize brown colors was found as well as some germanium transistors.

How would a tiny adding console with class A operating battery tubes or transistors look like on the smallest Retex ABOX?

On a microphone chain 1st gain control (attenbuation) should be at least after 1st active device amplifying stage, for avoiding overload?

Patent US3090926A on very low voltage germanium transistor eg. OC59 amplifier for hearing aids microphone preamp etc , uses a tunnel diode

Frequency response of the Pleiades V6 CV2269 electron tube mic preamp

This is possibly world's first pocket box electron tube microphone preamplifier operating directly with an AAA 1.2V battery derived electric potential for both heater and anode. Frequency. With the Freed variable inductance input transformer and a few feet output cable the frequency response is -10dB at 100Hz and 20KHz creating an unboomy natural vocal sound to listener's brain. There is also +2dB at 2KHz, +3dB at 3 KHz, +2dB at 4 KHz, +1.5dB at 5 KHz, -1 d at 8 KHz. So excellent vocal presence too to listener's brain. Excellent graduall electron tube overloading. Frequency response is simmilar to EMI REDD.37,.51 EQ settings, see Recording the Beatles book. It was firstly used on the song Tezcatlipoca - Ira, George.

The Pleiades K177 JFET microphone prepreamplier possibly needs a drain to ground resistor for mic transformer protection and electrical damping

Can Quantum Entaglement experiments be made with aperiodic PI Pythagoras number used as random generator?

Discussed this with Vicky while watching the relevant Horizon BBC program produced by microphone book author Alec Nisbett. (Alec Nisbett's name was seen on the Tascam 244 additional information notes on further reading. Bravo to Tascam.)

How would music made by Pythagoras PI sound like?

For example using the endless unrepeatable 3.1415... to dictate notes. Eg Mi Do Fa for 3 1 4 ... (Discussed yesterday with Vicky).

How can this great snare sound that we hear on great records be made?

One way is by overloading simple class A transistor amplifier common emitter circuits. See previous posts. The unprocessed snare sound from the Alan Parsons sound check 2 CD, sounded more like Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears

How would the 2 transistor microphone preamplifiers sound if the feedback resistor is removed?

Without negative feedback distortion would be less abrupt, ie gradual distortion of more pleasing low order overtones. For example removing or increasing the 2nd transistor collector resistor to emiiter of 1st transistor on the electronic kits mentoned on previous posts. These simple class A (electrons flowing all the time) circuits are based on the Mullard book examples. References: 1. Tubes vs Transistors, is there an audible difference - Russel O. Hamm - JAES. 2. Overload behaviour of 2 transistor Smart kit 1024 microphone preamplifier driven by Alan Parsons Sound Check 2 CD while driving headphones

Signal path: various test CDs - Sony CD Walkman - Solartron dB attenuator - Smart Kit 1024, R1=0Ohms, Vb=9V or 18V. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode sounds big but not as airy smooth as on Pleiades V6. 1 KHz reference tone from Hitech magazine CD clips rather abruptly, within 1 dB input increment, posibly due to the negative feedback circuitry. Alan Parsons CD: Clipping behaviour of: Tenor, Soprano, Piano unacceptable, Male Rock Vocal nice, Guitars great, Electric guitar amazing distortion, Bass Guitar amazing sound, Flute amazing, Saxophone unbeleivable overtones, percussion poor, Kick Drum amazingly big, Snare Drum amazing crispness, Cymbals, Hi Hat big sound with distortion, Toms unbeleivable especiall bass tom sounding 10x bigger, deeper, Violins, cellos, Woodwind crap distortion, Orchestra String Music Track with boosted airness, Organ bad distortion. How would Pleiades Darlington mic preamp compare?

Driving headphones with the Pleiades V6 1H4 microphone front end

Signal path: Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode on CD - Sony CD Walkmman at line out - Solartron laboratory step db attenuator - Pleiades V6 1H4 open grid Va=1.3V, Vb=12V, Altec input and output transformers = Sennheiser HD580. It sounds like a crystal palace of full bandwidth. Slow recovery of gain reduction (when overloaded) from limiting due to rectification effect due to open grid, distortion somewhat interesting.

Inductance behaving relativistically?

We know from Einstein's relativity theory that mass becomes infinite at speed of light. Mechanical force equals mass times rate of change of speed. Electrical force ie voltage equals inductance times rate of change of current. So inductance is analogous to mass. Does inductance become infinite when electrons travel at speed of light? Does inductance change with speed of electrons?

If it sounds amazing acousticaly it can record greatly

If it sounds just OK, chances are that it can record awfully as the microphone does not have a brain. See previous posts on recording outdoors on a square, a forest, a balcony, indoor ordinary living room (worst case?), block of flats stairway.

The dodgy greengrocer and the composer client

A game for kids teaching the to compose music. All we need to know is the 1st bass note. For this defines the musical scale or key ie the set of the allowed 7 notes. For example the song To Megalo Mystiko Mou - Kapnisis: 1st bass is C, scale is C minor ie the set with elements the notes C, D , bE, F , G , bA , bB. Music even at its most involved moments uses the simple rule 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 intervals or notes with respect to bass. For example on the song above when bass is G, the harmony chord is G bB D F, (all these notes are played at a nearby moment in time. Therefore greengrocer named G is selling Gabbages, Brocoli, D....., Flowers, A...., C....., E..... The buyer ie the composer decides which ones to buy and use in the composition with aesthetics as a guide. Did you know there are many partner positions 2 transistors can have in order to make a Darlington pair?

See Sidney Darlington patent.

www.smartkit.gr

Many of their kits are with descrete transistors in class A operation. For example the Smartkit 1010 5 input mixer (adder), or the 1024 2 transistor microphone preamplifier. Just visited the Smartkit shop in Athens. Alexandros who is very helpful told me that Quasar E lectronics UK are their best customers, selling their kits. They kindly sent the 1010 5 input mixer instructions and schematic so that a teen atempt on a very nice beige, brown small console Retex box can be repaired.

Making a microphone preamplifier with just one Darlington transistor pair?

At your risk. For example: Mic - input transformer - coupling capacitor - base of Darlington pair inside an XLR plug! - bias resistor from Collector to Base - Emitter to ground - output transformer primary from Collector - 9V battery supply with safety fuse from + to output transformer other primary terminal - preamplifier output from output transformer secondary winding. Pleiades circuit diagram or schematic drawing in pink color, date time code 21031716. Possible implementation inside or on top of a hammond orange octagonal box. Provision for a Pleiades filter at the mic XLR terminals with a passive mic XLR filtered output before or after the input transformer. Pleiades filter possibly made with a tapped inductor in series with a variable resistor and the resultant in parallel with mic. Using a BC109 with BC108 pair or a 549 with a 548?

Using Neutrik XLR connectors for pluging in transistors (like pluging in electron tubes)

For example connecting pin X to emmiter, pin L to base, pin R to collector. The transistor can be housed inside an XLR cable connector for easy plugging in to an XLR chassis connector. Using undustrial 3 or multi pin connectors too, for transistors, low voltage electron tube circuits, signal transformers etc?

The excellent acoustics of recording music outdoors

Vicky, a simple melody

This melody came while Vicky was playing on the piano, after she had insisted that a Telefunken Magnetophon automatic with electron tubes must come back to the Pleiades lab. It felt happy. Key is G Dorian ie all B are flat. Bass code is G7 to C or B7 to B246 ie bB D F A to bB C E G. melody is: --DE F-D- B7 B-F- --ED E-G- B246 --E- repeat in loop ----- means sustained note as many 1/8ths as -----s.

Music written for a plane
