Secondary is connected to each grid of a say ECC84 electron tube. Centre tap is connected to minus of say 4 volts coin battery (Vc) for bias. Positive terminal of battery to the 2 cathodes. Primary of the output transformer say 6Kohms to 8 Ohms to the 2 anodes. Centre tap to possitive say 150V from batteries in series in series with fuse. Negative of this Vb supply to the 2 cathodes. Va supply from a batterry of say 6 volts in series with fuse to heaters. That's all folks. This is the Pleiades push pull or differencial single electron tube (2 in one bulb) only audio power amplifier. Enjoy!

Eureka, How to get an amazing sound out of any good dynamic microphone

At your risk. With a descent singer it should be possible to get that Broken Wings-Mr. Mister or for example Frozen-Madonna sound quality. 1. Great acoustics meaning no early reflections, for example outdoors, large tall spaces, broadband sound absorbers (elastomer panels for bass reflection absorption)etc. 2. Mic 12" away from singers head, facing singer's head at say 45 degrees from above. 3. Connecting in parallel with mic output (voice coil) 2 electrical Pleiades filters. An inductor of say 230mH (82mH for an omnidirectinal mic) as a low cut filter to cut bass heaviness in reproduced voice. The second filter in parallel is a Pleiades (130ohm,20mH) ie an inductor of 20mH in series with 65Ohms in series with 65Ohms as a high pass filter at a high frequency with gentle slope in order to produce this amazing voice sparkle. 4. If the Lou Burroughs (Electrovoice) trick of using 2 omni mics out of phase and singing to one of them is used then the low cut filter can be ommited, mic to mic distance will adjust the low cutoff frequency (typically a few inches). 5. Monitoring with good large loudspeakers (for example Celestion Ditton 150) in order to hear those bass difects and correct them, (my humble opinion is that on headphones these problems so common on so many productions cannot be effectively heard, same for small speakers. Why EUREKA, nothing new discovered, Pleiades 2N3053

At your risk. It sounds fantastic. Even with a small output transformer althought at preliminary comparison the bigger Sowter SK05s may be better. Small size, small weight, in class A (electrons flowing all the time and dancing to music. It works well with different kind of loudspeakers. Althought less than one Watt it can fill a large room with comfortable great sounding music. No class B crossover distortion. No complicated phase spitter for push pull. No driver transistor needed, since the power transistor operates at low current, and output transformer steps this current up. Impedance matching for maximum power transfer done by output transformer. No complicated PSU, regulators etc, internaly chacing up the music signal needed. As simple as it may get, just one transistor, one bias resistor, one output transformer, one coupling capacitor, 2 12v batteries etc in series with a fuse. Pure class A with low power consumption. Small size, small power output, big sound with a bigish loudspeaker, (big cabinet compared with drive unit having a low reasonance frequency, deep bass, amazing mid, treble. Depth of sound, musicality and smooth detail, smothness. No negative feedback chassing up the music signal needed, no slew rate problem, no crest factor problem... Gradualy increasing low order harmonic (non linear) distortion as output signal increases, ie at high level. Distortion tends to 0 as signal tends to 0 (for example when signal passes throught to x axis, just like real musical instruments. Just like nature.

A small Grundig BV 9054-339.02 output transformer has been used at such low power consumption or power output much less than 1 Watt and the sound is still big with deep bass, great mid , great delicate, extended treble as expected from a class A (electrons flowing all the time) amplifier. Amazing deep bass. Great mid and treble when not on axis (sugestion from Vicky on Pleiades Auratone type speaker). So speaker enclosure is mounted on 2 speaker stands and Fostex speaker mounted on 3 ply cardbpard 4.6in to 8in adapter is facing the ceiling of the living room. Hence due to geometrical symetry people can enjoy music around the loudspeaker. Signal path: CD - Sony CD Walkman line out - Pleiades 2N3053 single transistor class A power amplifier with Sowter SK05s output transformer - Fostex FE-127E mounted on Pioneer CS-353 emclosure with tweeter hole covered and bass reflex hole almost covered. Future attempts may include creating 10mm sheet of 4 ply Etrusco Tarkett linoleum for a rectangular or cylyntrical enclosure or adding say 3 ply sheet of linoleum instead of betumin roofing flet on back of 9mm birch plywood for panel dampling. Also adding perhaps thin roofing felt etc away from boundaries inside the enclosure for air resonance damping together with porous absorber. Signal Path:The Alan Parsons Project The Definitive Collection CD - Sony CD Walkman D-EJ758CK 300 Ohms line out - 2 monoblock Pleiades 2N3053 - 2 (hand made) KEF CS-5 constructor series speakers with tweeter minus terminal connected to minus of speaker terminal - 1.7m x 3.2m listening room with all 3 doors open, back of speakers facing the double door, total area of lab about 100 meters squared, loudspeakers separated by 1m, on top of different cushioned chairs with springs, listener distance 1.4m. Power consumption must be just a total of 20mA at 24V. Sound quality: Hard to stop listening, If I could change your mind track sounds into cliping and too loud, much else like velvet, deep, easy, HF extended with creamy midrange and deep sound stage, sometimes too loud after a few hours I got tired, volume control should be reduced. Left, right spakers now corrected. Listening to Alan Parsons Sound Check 2 CD, more lifelike than commercial recordings. It is somehow hard to detect distortion with this amp even if it might be clipping, as the non linearity knee seems very gentle, so distortion of low order as it is just a single stage amp with almost no feedback, just a bit local from C to B. Still do not know at such level of sound quality if i prefare mono to stereo. Mono is better if one listens to the difuse sound field in other rooms. This 1920's topology implemented with a small transistor may be miraculous. Commercial recordings may sound too good to be natural. On the other hand for example the pipe organ on the AP CD sounds like being in an English church with the great long reverberation surrounding us. Pedal bass D does not sound creating intermodulation with upper parts of harmony. The train can burst you into laughter especially the squiking brakes.

The 1st listening test of the Pleiades 2N3053 single transistor power amplifier in stereo

At your risk. The design of such a system had been aided by listening in mono for many years until it souded almost perfect. How about now in stereo? Pleiades 2N3053 schematic description for each channel: 24V from 2 lead acid 1.2Ah batteries in series, + terminal to fuse holder with a 100mA fuse to one wire of primary of Sowter SK05s output transformer, other primary wire to the Collector of the 2N3053 transistor, either RCA/GE or Motorola, Emitter connected to battery -ve and signal ground, class A bias resistor 100Kohm to 200Kohm from Collector to Base using a series combination of fixed 100KOhm and 100KOhm variable resistor, music signal feeding the Base through a 10KOhm variable resistor (rheostat ie using only center and another terminal of a 10KOhm potentiometer), music electromagnetic signal output to all its pristine glory from the 8 Ohm secondary of this fabulous Sowter output transformer. This 1920's topology implemented with a small transistor may be miraculous. Commercial recordings may sound too good to be natural. Increasing the power of Pleiades 2N3053 amplifier

At you risk. Increased Vb from 12V to 24V, quiescent current with 200KOhms bias resistor from collector to base is about 10mA. Amazing sound while power is still much less than 1 Watt. On 1st May a second amp (the other channel for stereo) was built on 47cmx31cm plywood base board below an orange 40cm x 30cm linoleum Tarkett Etrusco sheet, connections with Wago connectors, pin wirewrap strips for transistor base, potentiometers, RCA connectors etc, connected with wirewrap, ie no soldering iron used troughout!. Fuse in series with battery is 100mA. Amazing sound with KEF CS5 or Celestion Ditton 150 speaker, both channels not tried yet. Naim Nait 2 amplifier tried on one speaker too for comparison, much louder but less bass depth or extenssion, bass sounded extended only when Nait was on stereo driving a pair of speakers. The 2N3053 almost no feedback design sounds easy with delicate, easy , extended treble, airy, quicy midrange and deep bass since the output transformer was included. Photographer Vangelis is interested in building one from the Pleiades 2N3053 schematic drawn to him. Vangelis kindly donated a pair of F&K Design speaker bases. Doubling the loudness of the Pleiades 2N3053 single transistor minimum negative feedback audio power amplifier

Audio transformers are amazing sounding fantastic creatures. Collector to base single biasing resistor changed from 100KOhms to 200KOhms. Sound is much more open, bigger, deep with more detail, louder. Collector current is just 5mA, am I dreaming? It makes sense since supply voltage is 12V, therefore Vb:Ic=12V:5mA=2.4KOhms, the output transformer is 2.5KOhm to 8 Ohms so impedance is matched, hence no energy reflected back from the speaker to the transistor. Signal path: Time - Alan Parsons Project - Sony CD Walkman 300ohms line out - Pleiades 2N3053 with Sowter SK05s - KEF CS5 constructor series (tweeter connected in phase since the day before yesterday!)

On making quick changes on experimental circuits

On opening vintage 80's radios, keyboards without breaking the plastic screw bearings

But not if the screwdriver tip is heated up at the right temperature so that the plastic becomes soft and no high screwdriver torque is needed. High volatge and low collector current operation shoulc mean low base current needed so power output should be possible by driving directly from a recorded music source just one transistor. Meanwhile the Pleiades 2N3055 single transistor amplifier in class A powered by just one 9V battery is connected to the Marantz Imperial 5G speaker given kindly by Maria and it sound Amazing with huge bass from just a 1/8W or so power amp. Smooth sound, great treble midrange and dynamis on CDs Promise - Sade, Ingenue - K.D. Lang. Single ended ECC84 poer amp sounds great tooo, possibly even smoother. At your risk. Possibly using plexiglass on the sides of the heatsink to mount the Neutrik RCA connectors etc. Would for example 8 AA batteries in series with the safety fuse fit inside too?

On improving Le Passific 2SK170 JFET MM RIAA Pre by Walter, Hiraga?

According to the trusty Tube Preamp CookBook - Allen Wright, while disc cutting treble is not increased above about 50KHz so while playback the inverse RIIA network should stop decreasing above 50KHz. So a resistor should be added in series with the capacitor cutting high frequency on passive networks. See Chapter Circuit Modules...Passive 5. This should give more air and life to the precious vivyl records. How would this neat trick sound on a DCC90 (3A5) Pleiades battery powered RIAA electron tube preamplifier?. How would it look made from plexiglass? Would an MC to MM stepup be needed made with transformers inside Neutrik modules, cylindrical or rectangular for example? Vinyl makes better men (women) of us all.
