The thickness of the 5in drive unit mounting side is at places double due to the normal folding arrangements inside a packing box.


It is just a good quality packing box.


It can be felt to vibrate at low frequencies thereby creating an effective large vibrating area, kicking out zillions of air molecules. So low frequency radiation is efficient.


In this sense it is more of a sound board than a speaker enclosure.


A piano has a soundboard which is the largest flat area of wood on a piano radiating sound. A glockenspiel metal rod sounds so faint if supported by insulated tubes even in wooden floor but when supported on the wooden structure of the instrument molecules can move presumably by the vibrating wood and air cavity. Same for a tuning fork, it's base must touch somewhere usually a surface.


A soundboard in Hellenic language is called ηχείο. Ήχος means sound. But a loudspeaker box in Hellenic is also called ηχείο which may cause confusion.


On these Pleiades speakers accidentally the linguistic mistake had been followed up and a soundboard must have been made rather than a speaker cabinet.


All sides vibrate. If ear is placed close to the back side it sounds somewhat like a normal woofer to subwoofer.


The other sides radiate or transmit mid frequency content of not great quality. Membrane absorbers have not been tried yet inside the box.


The top side radiates bass content as well.


It may be good that sound is transmitted by the thin side rather than be reflect back as this creates less energy if box standing waves. Ie the mid craziness inside the box would have been even more severe.


At a normal listening position having the drive units in front, towards listener's ears, the sound is very acceptable with great imaging due to the Auratone 5C single drive unit point source quality.


More investigation is needed.


Depth, imaging is superb.


Bass, mid, treble at the front is superb.


They can be driven directly by headphone out as when the speakers are on a table connected to a tablet computer, the source listener distance is small. Like wearing headphones at the other extreme of closeness. Without the inside the head perception of headphones.
