Since all electrodes are cylindrical, symmetrical etc...
For example looking at the bottom of the 7586 Nuvistor electron tube. This electron tube is also used in the legendary AKG C12A microphone.
The 2 symmetrical pins nearest the center are the heaters.
The closest then pin to center is cathode.
The furthest is anode.
Between the two is the control grid.
Index is the large lug. By looking the pins with the index lug down, we can visualize the electron tube as seen in a schematic. Cathode is down, above it is the grid, anode is at the top.
