If the old 110mAh Nickel Cadmium is leaky it can be very dangerous.
Isotopes of Cadmium are radioactive so do your own search on how dangerous it may be and how to handle the battery in a healthy and environmental safe way.
A good rule of thumb may be to wear latex gloves and after the battery is carefully removed that it stays inside the gloves, by removing the glove while holding the battery by the glove, and then the gloves sealed by making a knot at the open end.
Residues on the circuit board should be removed carefully with moistened cotton swabs? Is methylated spirit suitable? There should be free circulation of air in the room etc.
Is it a good idea to use a different type of battery cells for replacement instead of NiCd? For example 3 AAAA 1.2V elements of NiMh with a capacity of 120mA may be great. The pack can be professionally made at any battery selling center. The 3 elements in series make a pack which is nice, slim and long. The wires coming out of the DMX circuit board are perfectly close to the battery pack terminals and they can be carefully soldered with insulated heat sinking techniques.
