The mic to sound source proximity effect creates mid frequency band heaviness also

Especially on ribbon mics when used for singing at a small distance (a few inch) this mid heaviness may dominate and mask treble frequencies.

When bass heaviness or mid bass, mid heaviness is removed by for example a Pleiades (R,L) gentle slope high pass filter a good ribbon mic or a good mic of any type should sound like the vocals of The Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Signal Path:

Male singing voice at a few inch - various mics - Pleiades (130Ω,40mH) filter - German in line GSM 1, e+p relatively low primary inductance step up transformer - Tascam Porta 07 - Sennheiser HD 580

Without the Pleiades (R,L) filter on all mics tested the sound is harsh and distorted at mid range. It sounds as if someone is singing inside a barrel or a room of small volume.

With the Pleiades filter sound is smooth big and extended.

Tests recorded on 19031715 date time code cassette.

The mics used:
Lustraphone: very nice, a bit metallic which can be nice
Sony ECM-250: very impressive
Fostex M88RP 600Ω: very impressive, smooth
Beyer M119: very impressive some mid high accent (mostly due to particular Pleiades filter not optimum for its 250Ω impedance

Refining R,L values may be needed.
