Linoleum Pleiades Auratone 5C type speaker with an electron tube power amp

It dd not sound as good as expected.

A Regent radiogram UL84 single ended power amp was used.

Possible cause:

UL84 grid was underdriven by Sony CD Walkman line out. A mic step up transformer could be used.

Also the output tasnsormer is tiny. So there is little bass.

Electron tubes and transistors go down to limit of 0Hz. It is external passive components that limit frequency response. This is the case for the high frequency end too. [Storey]

Experiment may be repeated with a much larger Sowter SE transformer and perhaps EF183 with Pleiades bias and low plate voltage etc.

Auratone 5C type speakers deserve the best. And will reveal the best.

It may be possible that the horrortone name had come by listening to the sound of heavy negative feedback transistor amplifiers.
