Improving the sound of electric bass electric guitar acoustic guitar classical guitar, stringed instruments in general

This has been done in great pianos already and took several hundred years of evolution.

When the string is in tune it should be highly tensioned. This can be varied by the diameter of string used. If the strung is not highly tensioned the second and fourth harmonic of the string will sound low to the ear-brain giving the imoresion that the note is "sick".

So we try different thicknesses for each string until fundamental in relation to other harmonics sound in tune!

Too much tension will sound bad again and the string or instrument may break.

If a guitar sounds bad with existing string thickness it is easy to demonstrate improvement by tuning sharper (carefully). You end up with a better sounding instrument but not A440Hz. So for A440Hz one should experiment by increasing thickness up to the sweet point if the instrument can take the high tension.
