Pleiades Filters and Electric Bass Guitar

Symbol key:
Y: Yamaha RAX200 Bass Guitar
HD: Sennheiser HD580 Headphones
DM: Realistic Disco Mixer
V5: Pleiades V5 pre preamp
V4: Pleiades V4 pre preamp
H: Henry

Listened to perhaps the simplest possible flat frequency response electric Bass setup:
Y - DM - HD   (Bass connected to DM mic input, 7K? Input Z)
It sounded bass heavy like mud. One of the reasons should be Fletcher Munson curves.

A variable capacitor box was connected in series with Y and best sort of Mike Oldfield sound capacitor value was around 2.2 to 3.3 nF, nanoFarads!

Then Y was connected to V5 through a Canford Neutrik High to Low Z red 1/4 plug.
Y - C - V5 - DM - HD
Great sound too as the shunt 47mH of the V5 primary Pleiades input transformer was low cutting.

Then Y was connected directly to the secondary of V5 with great results as the 5.1H inductance of the secondary of the Pleiades input transformer was low cutting. Plus great compression as the 2 EF183 were generously driven.
Y - V5sec - DM - HD

More experiments were performed with V4
P: Pleiades Filter
Y - P - V4 - DM - HD
For P (shunt or in parallel inductor with Y output) the secondary of various transformers was connected. A Canford 90H sounded nice, a Pleiades 1H nice, a Pleiades 870mH perhaps even better. The treble control of the bass guitar was interacting with the inductor too giving interesting resonance effects at fully treble cut.

Then a step up transformer 500ohms to 50K was tried, (300mH to 45H). this gave excellent sound, treble was muffled due to V4 100K input impedance.
Y - step up - V4 - DM - HD

So a K117 JFET drain follower Pleiades pre preamp with 1.5V battery supply was tried with excellent and bright results as expected due to very high input impedance.
Y - step up - K117 - DM -HD

All the above low cut experiments subjectively removed the "mud" sound, increased bass perception as the brain was undisturbed to enjoy, increased mid and treble and perhaps most importantly of all gave a very nice finger attack sound.

Were they using that sort of stuff when recording albums like Pet Sounds-Beach Boys ?
