Why use more when one can use less?
After a few experiments it turns out that one can do away with the coupling capacitor of the JFET, and the source bypass capacitor.
Gain was experimentally maximized by varying the rouse resistor using a multi turn potentiometer.and a 440Hz tone with harmonic content from a Seiko electronic metronome close to the microphone. Maximum gain was found between 205 and 247 ohms.
So signal oath will be as follows.
Unidyne iii( with its internal step up Hi Z transformer) - gate of K117, source to Gnd 220ohms, Drain to iPad !
Ipad takes care of the bass increase proximity effect as it has a quite deep internal low cut.
