In his Kiss - Cher
Written in D Dorian. The D Dorian has all the notes white.
The D minor scale or key by comparison has all the notes white expect B which is B flat, ie the closest black key to the left of B.
The bass in this song is most of the time between D and G.
So when the bass is D, the chord by the 1.3.5 rule is D, F, A, ie D minor which sounds melancholic. Actually the code possibly used by the composer is D7, so the chord is D, F, A, C ie D minor 7th which sounds a bit more spicy.
When the bass is G, by the 1,3,5 rule the chord is G, B, D or B, D, G if we take a different voicing or inversion of the chord. The chord therefore is G major which is happy and uplifting.
If the scale was the D minor, the chord would have been G minor as B is flat in this scale by definition.
