A possible reason in that they are great at mid range too.
Madonna's voice for example comes from one point in space. Not the bass part from a woofer and the high part from a tweeter. And the mid part from both.
As can be seen at Acoustical Engineering - Olson even more than half a century ago double voice coil, or double cone principles were already well known and documented.
As of writing this a modern pop song is being played through such a speaker. The good quality sound fills with good quality music a large space. The amplifier is just a few milliwatts.
Signal path, setup:
(Baby don't go - Close II you, CD single) - Sony D-EJ758CK CD Walkman from line out - Pleiades 2N3053 power amplifier - Philips AD5046N
Just one amplifier and speaker is used. Who wants 2 Masonnas? Just one is enough.
