Your risk. This is no expert advice.
By looking at the schematic from the service manual:
It can be seen that although mono it has 2 playback amplifiers. Apparently one is used for playback monitoring with delay while recording. The other amplifier seems to be the one used for normal playback. So at normal playback the recording head is used as playback head. So it can do very accurate editing.
There is an elaborate circuit (bucket brigade) for VOR auto start so that the beginning of words is not lost. The frequency response of this circuit is restricted. The circuit can be bypassed.
There are quite a few descrete transistors in the circuit and one of them has an output transformer. The power amp is an IC.
The monitoring playback amplifier from monitor head is also an IC. Inside this IC block diagram are shown 5 transistors and no other components. A negative feedback loop connecting some of them but no components are shown of the NF block.
There is a servo amp board feeding the motor which has 2 terminals and a 3rd terminal going trough a 1 Megohm resistor to ground.
There is also an IC circuit for pre end detection.
The schematic was printed at the size of a towel.
