The Ferrograph 632 in the Pleiades lab

It is a 634 reel to reel.

It had been converted to full track stereo ie 632 with new 2 track heads.

If sounds big and extended at 7.5ips. Very big sound, better or more interesting than the original. (Paradox of analog recording). More frequencies added than the original? Higher average output level so the brain has better low and high frequencies, (equal loudness curves). And of course the sound is smooth like honey. (Microvariations in tape speed creating subtle frequency modulation caressing the ear (pitch distiguishing) basilar membrane?

It can drive the 300Ω Sennheiser HD580 headphones from its line out which is a cathode follower.

Signal path, setup:

Production:
Rock band playing in untreated living room - Grampian 25Ω GR1/L? ribbon re ribboned mics blumlein pair - Sowter 1:20 step up transformers - mic in of Ferrograph - Basf SM911

Reoroducrion:
The Basf SM911 - Ferrograph - Sennheiser HD580

At the moment only the lower track playback amplifier operates correctly.

Possibly due to a faulty or interminent connection output coupling capacitor.
