John Chowning, the man behind FM synthesis

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Chowning

John Chowning's patent US4018121 is used for example in Yamaha DX7
(Abstract: Musical Sounds are synthesized by means of frequency modulation with the carrier and modulating frequency being in the audio range and the modulating index being related to a (mathematical) function to control the bandwidth and evolution in time of the partial frequencies of synthesized sound.

If memory is correct from read interviews (please do your own search) his university did not get it at first and he was accused of using too much computer processing power. He had been sent away...
Then when Yamaha got it and FM synthesis, DX7 synths sold hugely etc, he was sent back to his university and been made director of department etc.

Most of the song hits we love from the 80s use one or many FM synthesized sounds usually from a Yamaha DX7 or DX7ii.

For example the bass sound of:

Broken Wings - Mr. Mister

Maria Magdalena - Sandra

Countless examples
