It is perhaps not a transistors fault

If a few million electron tubes were connected in all sorts of configurations creating very high gain only to be reduced by negative feedback creating abrupt overload characteristics, in all sorts of digital logic circuits, A to D, D to A etc then perhaps they would sound like digital.

But world class quality portable reel to reel recorders such as Nagra, Uher, Sony use just a handful of transistors from mic to tape. In class A operation meaning electrons flowing all the time. And they sound wonderful.
