When painting, colors may be added on top of other colors and a blend takes place.
Why not doing the same with music composing, recording.
Disconnecting the erase head. So that on each REC pass of the tape new information can be superimposed on the previous.
Drawback may be the erasing nature of bias itself. It may not be too much of a problem if microphones with very detailed treble are used such as MD421, MD21, MD211 etc.
From what is known this is how Mike Oldfield recorded his demo of Tubular Bells at home. He had borrowed a Bang and Olyfsen reel to reel and had used tape to cover the erase head. He might had disconnected a head channel and connected a preamp to a channel of the recording head so as to monitor while adding to another track. (All safety precautions should be followed when opening equipment and this must be done by experienced, knowledgeable, qualified persons only).
A great advantage of this technique is that everything is always first generation like oil painting.
