An agc (automatic gain control) patent for electron tube hearing aids:

What an idea.
If understood correctly the 1st variable gain electron tube has as anode the screen grid. So the anode is used as a diode for creating the side chain compressing or gain reduction DC signal...
How many hundred years were these inventors ahead of their time?
See also how it may be done automaticly by the diode rectification of the grid:
The Neumann U47 compressing - euroelectron
Operating Features of the Audion - E. H. Armstrong
