Music octaves vs engineering octaves on a Pleyel model 9 piano

After compete restoration of a Pleyel 1922 model 9 upright piano which took about 3 years the same Firminy factory strings were kept. It is not known whether these strings might had been installed ain around 1940.  See a previous post for elements of the restoration.


When stretching the strings until the sound is amazing with correct ear brain 2nd harmonic or 2nd overtone compared to fundamental...


and thereby corect sounding octaves to ear brain....


an example frequency measurment was:


F 360.2Hz


F one octave above 721.4Hz


By taking the 12th root of their ratio ie 12th root of 721.4/360.2 the number is 1.05958...clearly much higher than 1.05946...which is for horrible sounding "equal" temperament engineering octaves with the frequency ratio of 2:1.



Then some number cooking must had been done as in written notes it can be read on following lines 721.6Hz and 360.2Hz. Was 721.6 sounding even better? Anyway this gave a 12th root result of 1.05961...
